Minnie Lois Fletcher

1891-1988

Fletcher was born in Moultrie, Georgia. She attended Wesleyan College in Macon, Georgia and by 1917 she was working as an art teacher at Columbia College in Columbia, South Carolina. Fletcher applied to the Art as Applied to Medicine program at the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine in 1919 and trained under Max Brödel before graduating in 1921. After graduation, she spent over eighteen years working as a medical illustrator, with eight of those years being spent at New York Hospital and Cornell Medical Center. Fletcher was a member of the Art Students League of New York City. During her time as a student at Johns Hopkins, Brödel referred to her as a gifted portrait painter and she received several commissions from the institution and faculty.
